Gallon Black

Is the landlord accountable for throwing away my items?
In March I put four 33 gallon black bags filled with coats, sheets, and clothing directly in front of my storage unit which is also where I park my car. I put them there because it was very cold and I suspected bugs had gotten into the bags when they were stored in a previous location. I thought the cold weather would kill the bugs if they were in the bags. Well after two days I noticed the bags were gone. I thought my son put them inside of the storage unit. Two weeks after assuming he put them inside the storage unit I decided to wash the items but they were missing. I asked the landlord if he saw the bags I placed in front of my unit and he said he threw them in the trash dumpster. I am angry and feel he should pay me for my things he trashed. It was obvious it belonged to me because the bags were sitting in front of number 4 storage unit. Is this a good complaint to take to court? Do you think I can win?
Given that the items were in trash bags, I would have also assumed that since they were out in the open and in those, that’s what they were. I am sorry that you lost those things, but I really doubt the landlord would be liable in this instance.
