what’s the difference between “pipe” , “tube”, “duct” and “channel” ?
any answer will be appreciated, and the best will get 10 point! thanks
Pipe, Tube, and Duct are nearly synonymous, although each has some unique denotations and connotations.
PIPE and TUBE both have the following denotation: A hollow cylinder of metal, wood, or other material, used for the conveyance of water, gas, steam, petroleum, etc.
PIPE can also mean: A tube of wood, clay, hard rubber, or other material, with a small bowl at one end, used for smoking tobacco, opium, etc.
TUBE can also mean: (1) A small, collapsible, cylinder of metal or plastic sealed at one end and having a capped opening at the other from which paint, toothpaste, or some other semifluid substance may be squeezed;
(2) Any hollow, cylindrical vessel or organ (e.g., the bronchial tubes), or
any hollow, elongated body or part (Botany);
(3) An underground train or subway; or
(4) a television set.
DUCT, on the other hand, is a broader term used for conduits made of any material, and is defined as follows: (1) Any tube, canal, pipe, or conduit by which a fluid, air, or other substance is conducted or conveyed.
(2) Anatomy, Zoology. A tube, canal, or vessel conveying a body fluid, esp. a glandular secretion or excretion.
(3) Botany. A cavity or vessel formed by elongated cells or by many cells.
CHANNEL is not the best synonym for the other terms. It usually refers to: (1) a stream, river, or waterway or (2) a groove or furrow.
(3) In cell biology, a channel is a transient opening made by a protein embedded in a cell membrane, permitting passage of specific ions or molecules into or out of the cell.
