My toy fox terrier is scared of her new food and water bowl?
Her old bowls were torn up so i got her a new set they are stainless steel with an iron holder because it was the only choice in the right size. all the other bowls were huge. i put her food and stuff in it and sat her down by it and she freaked out. i put her treats in it and she woulfnt eat those. i even tried canned food and it didnt work how do i get her to like these bowls and eat and drink?
When you say it has an “iron holder,” do you mean the dish is off of the ground? Small dogs do not need a dish that is off of the ground, so putting it on the floor might help.
Since it is stainless steel, they make strange noises when food is placed in the bowl, and it can scare some dogs when it moves around. Whatever you do, do not force her to approach the bowl, since it will increase her fear. It is much healthier for her to discover that it is safe on her own.
If it moves around alot, you could put it on a cloth place mat to see if that makes it stay in once place to prevent scary noises from happening, or you can learn how to desensitize her to the dishes.
edit: I am not trying to bash anyone, but do not interpret her behavior as her “playing games” with you. Her fear might sound ridiculous, but it does not help it get solved when to the dog. Patience is key, so allowing her to discover the dish on her own (or a desensitization plan) will help her overcome her fear. It is like how some people are scared of spiders: some might find it stupid to be afraid of them, but to the person who is afraid, it is a big deal.
